Springboks are reminiscent of the Thomson's gazelle in appearance. Like these, they have a dark, reddish-brown stripe separating the tawny upperside from the white belly. On the white head, a thin stripe extends from the eyes to the upper corner of the mouth. The elongated dorsal hair can only be seen when the animal "flaps", that is, jumps up with stiff legs and arched back - the eponymous behavior. Both sexes have ringed, lyre-shaped horns; those of the females, however, are slimmer.
